The Living Corpse #3, carrying an April 2008 publication date from Zenescope, is a delightful piece of horror/comedy entertainment. Credits for this book’s creation, writing, and artwork are shared by Ken Haeser and Buz Hasson. The variant cover shown above is by Al Rio and Tom Martin.
The summary found at the publisher’s site tells us:
The taste for human flesh beckons once more and the Living Corpse is summoned through the fires of hell to do the bidding of a mysterious Native American shaman. An ancient beast stalks a cursed burial ground and threatens to raise an undead army unless the gatekeeper can stop him.
The line between good and evil begins to blur and the Living Corpse is at the DEAD center of an ancient plot that has waited centuries to be fulfilled. The Living Corpse now must battle the spirit of the Wendigo. But how do you kill something that has survived for eons
Text blocks over the first few graphic panels of this story are the thoughts of the zombie, dead but dreaming in his grave. “Even when I was alive, I hated the cold.”
He is, therefore, less than delighted when he’s summoned through the magic fire of a shaman to the cold Northern Canadian woods.
The old Indian tasks him with fighting and destroying the Wendigo, the beast mentioned in the publisher’s summary. And he sends his beautiful granddaughter (see the front cover, above) to guide him to the beast.
The monster is found and their fight begins.
Drained of energy during the battle, the zombie takes advantage of the fact that the Wendigo killed his guide by smashing her against a tree. He eats … her braaiins!
But this quick snack has unintended consequences for the living corpse, and the plot surprises us with a few unexpected twists before the book ends.
I’m happy to give The Living Corpse #3 a well-earned .75 ASB rating.
